WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN?
Chronic pain is described to be
a pain that lasts long enough, or is so intense, to impact
a person's normal activities and well being. It may come and
go or continue over a prolonged period of time. Pain can arise
anywhere in or on the body.
Chronic Pain can come as a result
of an injury, illness, or just naturally as a result of aging.
This is noticed by the brain to be an unpleasant sensory which
needs attention. An emotional response escorts this pain and
thus a combination of health as well as encouragement is therapeutic
to the sufferer. The incoming pain signals trigger specialized
nerve cells in your brain to tell your muscles how to respond.
With chronic pain, the pain signals
keep firing up the nervous system for months, even years, either
continually or as flare-ups. In many cases, the response is
needless since the initial injury or illness is over. Or the
cause may be an ongoing condition like arthritis, an illness
like cancer or unknown. Whatever the cause, chronic pain often
is intractable. The cause of the pain cannot be removed or
treated, and the pain itself cannot be relieved Unrelieved
pain creates a vicious cycle. It can make people unable to
work, concentrate, socialize, eat properly, or sleep. That
in turn may lead to depression, anxiety and frustration, which
accentuates the pain and leaves the patient even less able
to cope with the normal activities of life.
The Chronic Pain Support Group is
there to help. It stands ready to encourage, support, and educate.
We currently meet at the Kentucky Inn, 525 Waller Avenue, Lexington,
KY. usually the third or fourth Thursday of each month. In
2006 we would like for individuals and organizations to help
us keep the dream alive for those who suffer from chronic pain.
Please consider a financial donation
to our charitable organization. A donation of any amount would
permit us to continue to offer our services. Those who pledge
monthly will be included in our program bulletin. Truly we
can accomplish much if we stand united.
